I use Network Solutions for domain registration and was very satisfied with the online site, description of services, pricing, and the entire ordering and set up process. My email and domain were up within 12 hours, and I really like the email flexibility I now have with regard to setting up multiple email addresses and directing them to my master account. Very good service and solution so far. Then I got frustrated…..
My blog is hosted on TypePad (another success story-more in a minute). I want to point my registered domain to my blog domain on TypePad’s site. First I read all the documentation on TypePad about domain mapping, and then the same for Network Solutions. I then went to the Network Solutions Advanced DNS Manager, in order to make the change. I couldn’t figure out how to complete the fields on the Network Solutions DNS Manager, so I read all the online documentation again, which was no help. Then I sent in a help request via email. I got a quick response (less then 2 hours) but alas, it said they couldn’t help me via email and gave me a ticket and phone number to call. I made the call, had a 15 minute conversation with a very nice gentleman at Network Solutions who ultimately couldn’t help me change the CNAME records and suggested that I get the numeric IP address from TypePad for my blog site, and change the A record to map my domain to that IP address. This I didn’t feel comfortable with, especially since all the stuff I read said only modify the CNAME records.
So I went back to TypePad via email help to ask what should I do. Within 2 hours I got a response from Colleen at TypePad, with clear instructions on how to make the change on the Network Solutions DNS Manager, and then how to activate the alias on the TypePad site.
Bottom line for this experience-
Network Solutions-great services, pricing and ease of ordering, questionable response on service request.
TypePad-I really like the software, the hosting service and it’s very competitively priced. The service response was excellent for this issue, when it wasn’t really their product that I couldn’t figure out how to work.
