Week 3 was last night and saw the biggest crowd we have had. Not sure if it was the nice weather or the March 3rd article in the FNP, but whatever, we were packed. More photos here.

The Bishop McNamara Council has been serving our St. John's parish and the larger Frederick community since our founding in 1912. We've been here lending a helping hand to our church, our priests, and to those in need in Frederick for almost 100 years.
The Knights of Columbus, chartered in 1882 in New Haven, CT by parish priest Father Michael J. McGivney, is the largest family, fraternal, Catholic charitable organization in the world. Our 1.8 million brothers are dedicated to the support of our church, priests, communities, and families.

On Thursday February 18th, you can enjoy a good meal, and help Brother Brian Duncan raise money for Habit For Humanity of Frederick County.
Brian and several friends will be bar tending in the evening at Uno's on Route 355 in Frederick. Even if you can't make it out for happy hour or dinner, you can support the effort at lunch too. 20% of your bill all day will go to Habit For Humanity of Frederick County if you print out this coupon and present it to your server with your payment.
Ron Cramer of Habit For Humanity of Frederick County told Brian, "I greatly appreciate the support and help you are providing for this event. Funds raised go to our Madison Street Project here in Frederick City. It is a duplex homes which will house two Habitat Partner Families, both single Mom's who are supporting their families after years of domestic abuse. Each family has been waiting on a Habitat home for over 2 years and are looking forward to seeing their hopes and dreams come true. So your help with this project and others is very important to us here at Frederick Habitat."

Mr. Pierre Lamar is the winner of our first Super Bowl raffle. Mr. Lamar's ticket was drawn by Monsignor Dick Murphy on Sunday, January 31st in the Parish Cafeteria.
When asked how many tickets he had purchased, Mr. Lamar's reply was "none." The winning ticket was purchased by Mr. Lamar's parents, as they visited Frederick to watch the Lamar children for the weekend. After attending Mass, the senior Mr. Lamar, who is a brother Knight, purchased a ticket to support the Knights and put his son's name on it.
Supporting the "what goes around, comes around" premise, the Lamar's had recently purchased a gift for friends who had assisted the Lamar's when they relocated to Frederick. The gift-a 42" Panasonic plasma TV.
Don Rohr was the Knight who sold the winning ticket and won $100 for his efforts.
Congratulations to Don and the Lamar's and thank you to all who supported our Super Bowl Big Screen TV Raffle.

Friday evenings during Lent, please join the St. John's community for a fish dinner in the Community Center Cafeteria at 114 East 2nd Street in Frederick. Please use the entrance at the rear of the building.
The dinners are hosted by the Bishop McNamara Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Friday Lenten fish dinners will be held from 5-730p starting on February 19th and ending on March 26th.
Our 2010 menu includes baked flounder or fried Alaskan pollack, served with dinner roll and two sides-French fries, mac and cheese, cole slaw, green beans, Central American rice with salsa Criollo. Ala carte items are fish sandwich, fish sticks, cheese pizza, scrambled eggs, and desserts.
Suggested donation: $9 for adults; $8 for seniors and youngsters 12-17; $4.50 for kids under 12. $1 off/ meal for 5 or more on the same order. Proceeds benefit the charitable works of the Bishop McNamara Council of the Knights of Columbus at St. John’s.

Our annual Council Lenten Fish Fry begins only three weeks from this coming Friday. We will be serving dinner on the six Fridays of Feb 19, 26, Mar 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 5p to 730p in the cafeteria at St. John the Evangelist.We are looking for volunteers to work during the six weeks of the Fish Fry. You can review a schedule of times and tasks by clicking here. Please email or call Dave Satterfield at (301) 695-9633 to sign up as a volunteer. This is a large and important event, so we can use as much help from the Council Brothers as possible.
We also need your help to promote the Fish Fry. We have created several documents to help. They include a menu (English or Spanish), press release, and flier (Spanish or English). Please help get the word out and encourage your friends and neighbors to attend, or plan to bring a group to the dinner and enjoy a good meal and the warm fellowship of our Council and the St. John's Parish.The Bishop McNamara Council is conducting a fund raising raffle during the month of January. The prize is a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV, just in time for the big game. Proceeds from the raffle will support the Knights charitable efforts on behalf of the St. John's Parish and the larger Frederick community.
Speak to the Knights after Masses the weekends of January 16/17 and 23/24 to purchase a ticket. Suggested donation is $10 per ticket. The drawing will be held on Sunday, January 31st in the cafeteria after the 11a Mass. You need not be present to win.
UPDATE January 25, 2010: LAST CHANCE. Ticket sales are extended and tickets will be available from Knights this week and this weekend (January 30/31)after Masses. In early December, the Bishop McNamara Council held a pancake breakfast fundraiser. Here is what the hard work of our Brothers and the contributions of our parishioners accomplished.

Last Saturday I went shopping with Kim Teunis and Rene Beissel from BirthRight of Frederick. The money we raised ($500) bought 72 items of quality name brand children's clothing and accessories for kids ranging in age from newborn up to 3 months; a value of $1373, from Kohls Department store. This was made possible because the BirthRight team believes in shopping the sales and deals to get the most value for the money entrusted to them.
These articles of clothing will last several years, especially since young mothers often bring back the clothing to BirthRight for others to use. BirthRight's stock of clothing was at a low point, so our council and parish has "saved the day," so to speak. The service that BirthRight performs day after day for young mothers and their tireless efforts to prevent the loss of the unborn is truly a blessing and praise to God.
