Lenten Fish Dinners

Friday evenings during Lent, please join the St. John's community for a fish dinner in the Community Center Cafeteria at 114 East 2nd Street in Frederick.  Please use the entrance at the rear of the building. 

The dinners are hosted by the Bishop McNamara Council of the Knights of Columbus. 

Friday Lenten fish dinners will be held from 5-730p starting on February 19th and ending on March 26th.

Our 2010 menu includes baked or fried Alaskan Pollack, served with dinner roll and two sides-French fries, mac and cheese, cole slaw, green beans, Central American rice, salsa criolla.  Ala carte items are fish sandwich, fish sticks, cheese pizza, scrambled eggs, and desserts.

Suggested donation: $9 for adults; $8 for seniors and youngsters 12-17; $4.50 for kids under 12.  $1 off/ meal for 5 or more on the same order.  Proceeds benefit the charitable works of the Bishop McNamara Council of the Knights of Columbus at St. John’s.

Your prayers are requested for Sir Knight Bill Kinsella, Past Grand Knight of St. Katharine Drexel Council #14011, Past Faithful Navigator of Bishop McNamara 4th Degree Assembly #384, and current District Deputy (DD) for our neighboring District 5. 
 
For our newer members who may not know Bill, Bill also served as Past Grand Knight (PGK ) of our own Bishop McNamara Council #1622 for the 1999-2001 Fraternal Years, before he left to established the new Council #14011 as it's Chartering Grand Knight.  He is also a Past Chapter President (PCP) of our local St Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapter of Grand Knights.

Bill and Peg were active members of St. John the Evangelist Church before helping establish the St. Katharine Drexel Church.

I just visited with Bill Kinsella, DD # 5. Bill is in Room 4023 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, he has requested that the phone calls be at a minimum as he is truly very weak. Bill has a very dangerous strain of Pneumonia, and it can very serious in people over 65.

I ask that you please keep both Bill & Peg Kinsella in your Prayers.

Big Screen Raffle Winner

Mr. Pierre Lamar is the winner of our first Super Bowl raffle.  Mr. Lamar's ticket was drawn by Monsignor Dick Murphy on Sunday, January 31st in the Parish Cafeteria. 

When asked how many tickets he had purchased, Mr. Lamar's reply was "none."  The winning ticket was purchased by Mr. Lamar's parents, as they visited Frederick to watch the Lamar children for the weekend.  After attending Mass, the senior Mr. Lamar, who is a brother Knight, purchased a ticket to support the Knights and put his son's name on it.

Supporting the "what goes around, comes around" premise, the Lamar's had recently purchased a gift for friends who had assisted the Lamar's when they relocated to Frederick.  The gift-a 42" Panasonic plasma TV.

Don Rohr was the Knight who sold the winning ticket and won $100 for his efforts.

Congratulations to Don and the Lamar's and thank you to all who supported our Super Bowl Big Screen TV Raffle.

Wine And Cheese Insurance Knight Monday 2/1 @ 630p

Join us this Monday, February 1, 2010 at 630p for a wine and cheese social, as well as a presentation by our Worthy Financial Benefits Advisor, Chuck Teal.  The presentation will begin at 730p.
 
Bring your wife, as there may be some new insurance or investment (only available to Knight's and their families) of interest or benefit to you and your family.  Please note, this is only for informational purposes and there will be no hard sales.  If there is some interest, you can then schedule an appointment.
 
Additionally, our Chief Fish Fry Chef and Worthy Chancellor will have prepared samples of baked fish so we can provide opinions and improve the offering to our Lenten Fish Fry customers.

Join The Fourth Degree-March 27, 2010

Attention-all Third Degree Knights

Join the Fourth Degree – Reach Your Highest Potential

The Fourth Degree is a group of outstanding Knights, dedicated to promoting patriotism enlightened by their Catholic faith. 

There will be a Fourth Degree Exemplification on Saturday March 27, 2010 at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center in Frederick.

The requirements for membership are:

1.    Be at least 18 years of age;
2.    Be a citizen of the United States;
3.    Have been a First Degree member prior to September 27, 2009;
4.    Be a Third Degree member in good standing with your council;
5.    Be a practical Catholic in communion with the Holy See.

The Initiation fee for the 4th Degree is $70.  This includes 1 banquet ticket, Fourth Degree lapel pin, flag lapel pin, social baldric, and processing fees.  Additional banquet tickets for your wife are available for $40.

If you are interested in attending, please see Rob McNickle at our Council Meeting on February 1st.  Rob can help you fill out the 4th Degree application.  We need to have all applications by mid February, so don’t delay.

Lenten Fish Fry Is Coming Soon

Our annual Council Lenten Fish Fry begins only three weeks from this coming Friday.  We will be serving dinner on the six Fridays of Feb 19, 26, Mar 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 5p to 730p in the cafeteria at St. John the Evangelist. 

We are looking for volunteers to work during the six weeks of the Fish Fry.  You can review a schedule of times and tasks by clicking here.  Please email or call Dave Satterfield at (301) 695-9633 to sign up as a volunteer.  This is a large and important event, so we can use as much help from the Council Brothers as possible.

We also need your help to promote the Fish Fry.  We have created several documents to help.  They include a menu (English or Spanish), press release, and flier (Spanish or  English).  Please help get the word out and encourage your friends and neighbors to attend, or plan to bring a group to the dinner and enjoy a good meal and the warm fellowship of our Council and the St. John's Parish.

Raffle Update

We are well on our way to reaching our sales goal for the big screen TV raffle sales.  Thank you to all who took the time after your Mass to stand at the tables and assist our supporters.  Special thanks to Bob Boehman, Tom Plunkett and Jim Schneck who came back for seconds on table duty.  I also want to recognize Don & Bonnie Rohr, who for two weekends have attended both Saturday Masses to sell tickets.  Those two Masses proved to be more lucrative than anyone expected.  Also at the top of the leader board in sales is Rob McNickle, who has attended every Mass for this weekend and the weekend prior.

The work, however, is not quite done.  We will need volunteers to assist PGK Dick O’Connor and PGK Bill Wierzbicky with setting up the cafeteria for the after 11a Mass donut social where we will pull the winning ticket.  Please contact Dick (301-662-7198) or Bill (301-845-6115) to volunteer.  We will also be placing a “LAST CHANCE” flyer in the bulletin for this weekend to capture the last of the sales right up to 1230p on Sunday the 31st.  Again, I need your help manning the tables in what has been less than pleasant weather.  If you are one of the nine Knights who have tickets on consignment, please get them back to me before the 11a Mass.  Please, please do not miss the deadline.  Should you miss the drawing, it will be your responsibility to refund the purchaser the $10 collected.

Raffle Ticket Sales Continue This Weekend

We will be selling tickets in front of church this week-end.  Just as last week help is needed most at the Saturday Masses, the nine and one.  Due to the heavy rain last weekend, we are not doing as well as we hoped.  If you have family who have not purchased a ticket, or your employer allows you to solicit your coworkers,  please come by the booth and pick up some tickets on consignment.   Every ticket you sell is another chance you may win the $100.00 bonus.

Free Throw Contest Held

Our annual free throw contest for 10-14 year old teens was conducted jointly yesterday with SKD Council at the SJRCS gym.

Congratulations to the winners, who will advance to the district contest, which will be held on February 20th at 9a in the gym at St. Michael's in Poplar Springs.  They winners representing our council are:

Brothers Achieve Full Knighthood

Win A 42" Panasonic Plasma HDTV

The Bishop McNamara Council is conducting a fund raising raffle during the month of January.  The prize is a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV, just in time for the big game.  Proceeds from the raffle will support the Knights charitable efforts on behalf of the St. John's Parish and the larger Frederick community.

Speak to the Knights after Masses the weekends of January 16/17 and 23/24 to purchase a ticket.  Suggested donation is $10 per ticket.  The drawing will be held on Sunday, January 31st in the cafeteria after the 11a Mass.  You need not be present to win.

UPDATE January 25, 2010:  LAST CHANCE.  Ticket sales are extended and tickets will be available from Knights this week and this weekend (January 30/31)after Masses.  See a Knight to purchase your chance.  The drawing will be held Sunday, January 31st around 1230p in the church cafeteria.  Come join us for coffee and donuts.  Good luck!
